サンフランシスコの知られざるチョッパーヒストリー

1800年代中期のゴールドラッシュを機に世界に名だたるメトロポリスと化し、 続々と押し寄せる移民の玄関口へと発展したSan Franciscoだが、20世紀半ばに激動の時代を迎えていた。公民権運動や反ヴェトナム、フラワーパワーの震源となった港街には、それらカウンターカルチャーと呼応するように、Chopperという美しくも過激な乗り物を引き寄せる。以降SFはそれを取り巻くBay Areaを従えCustom Bike先進の地とされたのはご存知の通りだが、その黄金期である1960年台からChopperに乗るアジア人が、そこにいたことを知る者は稀だろう────
Vallejo在住のカメラマンKEN NAGAHARAが、ひとりの若きAsian Bikerとの出会いをきっかけに、 歴史に埋もれた知られざるチョッパー史を紐解いてゆく。

San Francisco’s Unknown Chopper History

The gold rush in the mid-1800s transformed San Francisco into a world-famous metropolis and the city became a gateway for a continuous wave of immigrants. In the mid-20th century, San Francisco entered a turbulent era. It became the epicenter of civil rights, anti-Vietnam War and flower power movements and in tune with these counter cultures, the city attracted beautiful, radical Choppers. As you know, San Francisco then ruled the surrounding Bay Area and became a mecca for custom bikes, but not many people know that from the golden age of the 1960s, there were Asians riding Choppers.
After meeting one young Asian biker, Vallejo-based cameraman Ken Nagahara started uncovering the unknown Chopper history that had been buried in time.

With the construction of a freeway net running across a vast land and going with the times, the Panhead had to adapt to a new style of transport. H-D exerted their best technological knowhow and made big updates many times. The remnants of dreams dreamt by engineers back then remain engraved in our hearts.

Guardians of Old School Since the company’s founding in 1969, Paughco has provided products that make Chopper jockeys around the world go wild under the motto “Bringing you the finest in American-made products.” They are a legend in the custom bike scene and even as they have grown to be the biggest maker of aftermarket parts for H-D in the U.S., almost all production happens in their own factory. RIPPER reports from the company’s headquarters in Carson City, Nevada.
