Passion for Speed

スクーターという乗り物が登場して以来、世のスクータリストたちは常にスピードを追い求めてきた。本特集では、往年のスポーツスクーターをイメージして制作された車両から、極限のレースに挑むレーサー、そしてストリートでより楽しく気持ちよく走るために制作された現代のストリートカスタムについてもフォーカスする。

 Since the debut of the scooter, scooterists throughout the world have continued striving for speed. In this special feature, we focus on three custom scooters: a machine based on the sport scooters of yesteryear, a racer constructed for maximum speed, and a street custom built for more enjoyable riding performance.

1952 ACMA Vespa

NEIGHBORHOODディレクター、滝沢伸介。モーターカルチャーへの深い造詣を背景に、多くのヴィンテージマシンとの生活を楽しんでいる。これまで何台かのVespaを乗り継いだ彼が所有するこの車両は、在りし日の欧州シーンを彷彿とさせるものだ。

Shin Takizawa, the director of Neighborhood, is deeply familiar with motor culture and owns many vintage machines. His riding history includes several Vespas, and the Vespa from his collection featured here is evocative of the European scene of yesteryear.

1959 NSU Prima 3 Drag Racer “The Puzzle”

欧州のカスタムビルダーやプライヴェーターなど数多くのエントラントが参加するドラッグレース、Glemseck 101。モーターサイクルが中心のイベントにスクータークラスが新設されたのは2024年のこと。ここで紹介するNSU Prima 3は、Glemseck 101に向けてドイツのプライヴェーターが製作したスプリンターである。

Glemseck 101 is a drag race whose participants include custom builders and amateur builders from across Europe. Although it primarily features motorcycles, a scooter class was added in 2024. The NSU Prima featured here, which was crafted to compete at Glemseck 101, is the latest sprinter from an amateur German builder.

60年代の英国を席巻したユースカルチャー、MODS。日本では70年代にそのカルチャーが到来し、現在も東京をはじめとした各地で有志たちが精力的にシーンを盛り上げている。ではかの英国では？ もちろん、その火はいまだに途絶えてはいない。オリジナルMODSが残っていることはもちろんだが、彼の地でも確実にカルチャーは伝承されている。今回紹介するのは、70年代後半生まれのMODである、Joe Wakefieldが情熱を注ぎ込んだTV。丹念な時代考証を経て、いまなお進化を続ける究極の1台である。

The mod youth culture that took the UK by storm in the 1960s arrived in Japan in the 1970s, and the scene is still going strong in Tokyo and throughout Japan. Of course, in the UK, the scene is still alive, and the culture is being passed down from the original mods to a new generation. In this feature, we introduce you to Joe Wakefield, a mod born in the late 1970s, and the superb period-correct TV he has poured his passion into and continues to work on.

Fuji Rabbit Prototype “41P”

スクーターという乗り物がこの世に誕生してから70余年。各社の技術者たちは、時代ごとに人々の暮らしや世相を反映しながら、数々の傑作や意欲作を生み出し、世に問うてきた。そして、それらを当時の姿のまま後世に残すべく尽力するフリークたち。TimelessGems. それは時代を超えて受け継がれてゆくべき技術遺産だ。今回は富士重工がS301をベースに製作した試作車、開発コードでは“41P”と呼ばれた幻の車両を紹介する。

It has been 70 years since the birth of the scooter. Throughout that time, technicians at various manufacturers have produced ambitious models that reflected the lives and social conditions of the period in which they were produced. Thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts, some of the machines have been preserved in their original condition. These timeless gems are technological heritage that should be passed down for generations to come. In this edition of “Timeless Gems,” we feature an ultra-rare Fuji Heavy Industries prototype referred to as “41P0” and created from an S301 base.

Kyushu has a well-developed motor culture, and people there are passionate about motorcycles, cars, and scooters from Japan and abroad. Viva la Revolution is a Kyushu-based volunteer-organized event specially created for iron scooter owners.

In this feature, we introduce you to the latest from Royal Alloy, whose scooters are homages to famous Lambrettas from yesteryear but are equipped with modern engines and suspensions. These two new models set a new standard for heritage scooters and are sure to capture the hearts of vintage fans.
